REVIEW: Bank of Ireland - Aer Lingus Credit Card

Updated: Mar 3, 2021

In March of 2019 I finally received my brand new Bank of Ireland Aer Lingus Credit Card - The only Avios travel card available in the Republic of Ireland!

Now right of the bat I'm annoyed at the pitiful reward scheme Aer Lingus has decided on. (Fun Fact: I rang BOI and confirmed that they're only responsible for the actual credit card side of things and the reward program is entirely in the hands of Aer Lingus so I'm happy to blame them)

You earn 1 avios for every 4 EURO you spend on the card. That gives this card an award value of €4 per avios which is OUTRAGEOUSLY BAD! The industry average is 1:1. I earn Membership Reward points through my Amex and am able to convert these points to Avios. Through my Amex I'm able to earn points at a cost of approximately €0.58 per avios which as you can see is a lot less than BOI.

AerClub (Aer Lingus's Frequent Flyer Program) has a deal with JustEat.ie which allows members to collect 10 avios for every €1 they spend on the app. This means on a €20 takeaway, users will collect a whopping 200 avios points on that transaction.

To earn the same number of points would require you to spend €800 on the Aer Lingus Credit Card. €20 vs. €800.... hmmm.... Doesn't REALLY make sense does it?

Anyway, here's my review which was shot from the back yard of my Airbnb in beautiful Palm Springs! Take a look and let me know what you think!
